LOVECATS!
I’m so excited to share a new project I just started over the weekend - one that’s actually been percolating for YEARS, if I’m honest, I just didn’t know how to bring it to life until now!
WHAT IS IT?
IN THIS ISSUE — is a new monthly series where each month, I’m flipping through ONE vintage fashion magazine cover-to cover to uncover timeless style, forgotten gems, and iconic looks that still inspire today. From editorial deep dives to curated shopping guides, I’m bringing you modern ways to wear iconic looks from past pages, decades and eras, one issue at a time.
It’s a return to where my fashion obsession began: not scrolling, but flipping. One issue a month from my personal collection, one fashion editorial at a time.
HOW & WHY NOW?
We’re living through yet another wild time in history right now and I, for one, need a major escape from it (and I’m betting that you do too). Fashion has always been my escape, and I thought for a while that I had lost my love for it, but it’s clear to me that it was just lying dormant, pushed aside for the last (almost) decade, where I was putting my efforts into different businesses and relationships that were quite honestly, sucking the life out of me. But I’ve found myself again, in some capacity anyway, (as you have watched over the past year or more) and it’s funny how almost instinctively, I came full circle RIGHT back to where I it all started.
Though I speak about it (at length) in the video (you should totally watch it, by the way, it’s free here 😊) this all began last Wednesday evening, when I was a little bored and randomly pulled out a vintage Seventeen magazine from my collection, sat down at my desk and started flipping through it. Halfway through, I spotted a page that was showcasing jewelry boxes - and I fell in love with one of them.
My first thought was “I WANT THAT”, but the magazine is from 1967…
For reference, I’ve been trying to motivate myself to finish my closet for a month now, not to mention it’s been almost a year since I moved here, and usually my closet is first on the list, but for some reason, I’ve put it off, I’ve been procrastinating… but when I saw this jewelry box, I felt inspired to finish it. It seems silly, but I have vintage hat boxes with stripes and I thought it would match and for a moment felt a little sad that I couldn’t buy it now…
And then I remembered the internet…
And then I decided to do a little search for it… and found nothing - at first.
And then I searched eBay… and found 2 😊
And then I bought one for $25 and was giddy with excitement waiting for it to arrive. Here she is…
When I woke up the next morning, (last) Thursday, I read that Anna Wintour had stepped down from her position at Vogue and I RAN to my magazine shelves to see if I had her very first issue… which I did. 😊 ( if you follow me on instagram, you might have seen it in my stories, but I saved it to my highlights if you’re interested).
Anyway, between these two small and mostly (uneventful to most) events is where IN THIS ISSUE spawned. The idea to be able to shop vintage magazines NOW, has me giddy, AND the way I’m excited about sharing new/old fashion/style inspiration in a way I haven’t in YEARS, also has me EXCITED!
I explain further in the video, but this is the gist of it.
I launched IN THIS ISSUE on Sunday night… and today, I began this new journey - with Anna Wintour’s first issue ever, November 1988, breaking down the cover look… Read it by clicking below, everything is free for the month of July.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
You can read about the entirety of the project here, or watch the video here but as a THANK YOU to all my paying subscribers HERE, I’m giving you a FREE paid year subscription there. If you don’t want it, you can cancel it, but it’s free, you’ll have access to everything for an entire year.
AND for the MONTH OF JULY ONLY, any new paying subscribers HERE, will also get a free paid year over there… so you’re getting both for the price of this one!
I wanted to charge $3 a month over there, which was the price of VOGUE in the ‘80s, but Substack’s minimum is $5 - so it’s $5 there, which is less than here, but I explain why I price this as I do in the video as well.
I won’t be sharing any personal style or photos of myself there, it’s all fashion, all magazines, all shopping, and so much more! I’m already inspired to pull together my version of the cover look, which I will share here - not there.
You can also follow along via Instagram, @thenewlook_is IN THIS ISSUE which was an old account I used to sell items before I started using Postmark, so you might already be following there, and again, if you would rather not, you can opt out. But I wouldn’t - because it’s about to get FUN around here! And I haven’t felt this way since my early blogging days of fashion and DIYs!
Anyway, watch the video for the full story and come back on Thursday for Chapter 11 of Everything She Never Had
Happy July, Lovecats!
Thank you for all of your support over this last year especially, but always, I truly appreciate you. 😽
xoxo …love, Maegan 💋
